By: Mississippi Farm to School Network Summer Intern Owen Barnard
The Mississippi Farm to School Network recently held a celebration event in Jackson, Mississippi on Wednesday, July 19 to celebrate its accomplishments over the past year.
At the event, students at EE Rodgers SDA Academy Summer Camp enjoyed locally grown watermelon, activities, and an in depth look at their school garden.
State and Federal elected officials such as state Representatives Kathy Sykes and Dan Eubanks, as well as JoAnn Clark from Senator Cochran’s office were in attendance.
The celebration served as an excellent opportunity to continue the work of the network, and to spread the word about its recent successes. Farm to School programs in the state have also received growing support in the past year, and we were excited to have Mississippi Department of Agriculture’s Brandon Cobianchi and Susan Head in attendance, as well as Kenyetta Griffin from the Mississippi Department of Education. Program Officer Jed Oppenheim from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation joined in on the fun as well.
The growth and effectiveness of the MS Farm to School Network greatly enhanced by their support as well as the great work of the Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi, who at the celebration event engaged EE Rodgers’ summer students in exciting games an activities that built a platform for healthy living for the future.
Thanks so much to the crew at EE Rodgers SDA Academy for hosting us!
In the future, The Mississippi Farm to School Network aims to continue connecting farms with schools in order to bring Mississippi products to school cafeterias, while strengthening local agricultural economies.
